Differentiation of Pediatric Musculoskeletal Infections in the Emergency Department (SMILE)

Health Condition: Musculoskeletal infections
Health Impact Domain: -

Summary

Serious Musculoskeletal Infections (SMIs), which includes septic arthritis (SA), osteomyelitis (OM) and pyomyositis, are a global problem. In the U.S. alone in 2012, there were 12,500+ cases of pediatric SMIs. Extrapolating to the worldwide population of > 7.8 billion people in 2021 there would be > 370,000 global cases this year alone. The adverse outcomes after SMIs are well known: destruction of articular cartilage, pathologic fracture, limb deformity, chronic infections, early-onset osteoarthritis, osteonecrosis, long-term pain and permanent physical disability, which can negatively impact the quality of life. Early, accurate diagnosis and treatment can mitigate these adverse outcomes.
