Summary

Emergency departments (EDs) are on the front lines of the opioid epidemic.1, 2 Since the landmark 2015 RCT demonstrated the effectiveness of ED-initiated buprenorphine in improving opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment outcomes and retention in adults, EDs across the nation have begun to implement ED-initiated buprenorphine.3 These ongoing efforts highlight that EDs have the capacity and potential to treat OUD and importantly link patients to ongoing substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. However, to date, little research has examined how the ED can best deliver treatment to adolescents and young adults (AYA) with OUD. The overall death rate from drug overdoses among adolescents is increasing, with > 50% of the annual deaths in this age group now attributed to opioids
