Summary

Our long-term goal is to conduct a randomized trial using a hybrid step-wedge design to evaluate implementation of an evidence-based EMS protocol for children with wheezing and moderate to severe respiratory distress. The specific health outcome is the hospital admission rate. The overall objective of this proposal is to address specific questions related to the implementation of the study and ensure its feasibility. The study will be conducted in the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) EMS Affiliates (EMSAs). The PECARN network is needed because of its existing and proven pediatric research infrastructure and its multiple EMS agencies, ensuring sufficient patient enrollment to reach a significant and generalizable conclusion.
